How your data is handled
These are plain notes on what the app actually does with what you write. They are not a formal legal privacy policy. If something here is unclear, email support@justshowupdaily.com.
Where your journal is kept
Your entries, to-do lists and synced settings are stored in your account using Google Firebase (Firebase Authentication for signing in, Cloud Firestore for the data). That is what lets the same journal appear on every device you sign in to, and survive losing one.
Each device also keeps a local copy so the app opens quickly and keeps working offline; it catches up with your account when it is back online. A few device-only preferences, such as theme and language, stay in that browser.
End-to-end encryption
Your journal is end-to-end encrypted. Everything you type — entries, to-dos and list names, and the name you go by — is encrypted on your device before it is saved, with a key that is locked by your passcode. We, Google (Firebase) and Cloudflare only ever hold the encrypted copy and cannot read it.
- Your passcode is never sent or stored. What is stored is a random salt and your encryption key, locked with a key derived from your passcode (PBKDF2-SHA256, 600,000 rounds; AES-256-GCM).
- Each device asks once. After you enter the passcode on a device, that device keeps the unlocked key in its own storage — in a form the browser won't let be copied out — so it doesn't ask again, even after you sign out. Settings → Privacy → Forget passcode on this device removes it.
- Changing your passcode (you know the current one) keeps everything and doesn't affect your other devices.
- If you forget it, nobody can recover it — not us either. If one of your devices is still unlocked, Settings → Privacy → Reset passcode sets a new one there after you confirm your account password, and keeps everything (your journal is re-encrypted with a new key). If no device is unlocked, resetting permanently deletes all your entries and to-dos and starts a fresh journal.
What is not encrypted, because the service needs it to work: your email address; which dates have an entry and when things were saved; each to-do's due date and whether it's done (so reminders can be sent — the reminder says how many tasks are due, not what they are); the order of your lists; your settings (language, which sections are shown); the badges you've earned; your notification times. If you sign in with Google, the name on your Google account is also known to Firebase.
The app's database rules also allow a signed-in account to read and change only its own data, and refuse any unencrypted write once encryption is on.
Notifications
If you turn on reminders, your notification choices and this device's notification token are saved to your account so reminders can be sent. Turning reminders off stops them.
Taking it with you
- Download your entries as a full backup file (JSON) from Settings, whenever you like. Downloads are decrypted — they are your own readable copy, so keep them somewhere safe.
- Download a spreadsheet (CSV) of the days and sections you choose.
- Restore entries from a backup file.
Deleting it
Settings → Your data → Delete all entries removes every journal entry from your account, and so from every device signed in to it. It does not remove your to-do lists, your settings or the account itself. Resetting a forgotten passcode deletes your entries and to-dos too.
To have your account and everything in it removed, email support@justshowupdaily.com from the address you signed up with.
Contact form
When you use Contact support, your message, email address, the topic you picked and a few technical details (the app's language, screen size, your browser, your approximate country, whether the app is installed and whether you are signed in) are sent by email to our support inbox so we can reply. It does not include your journal.
